Interactive Fiction
After a year hiatis, finally I am returning to one of most favorite things: interactive fiction. Although often labeled games, many are very free-flowing and open-ended, few rules tying one down. My favorite, which has quite the history, is Araulmor.
Life forced me into the lengthy leave, but now it is allowing me to return. Only task now is to attempt to rebuild my characters, salvaging what I can and move onward.
A bit more on interactive fiction. Many people are familiar with the Role-Playing genre as popularized by Dungeons and Dragons, Champions, and so forth. In those each participant assumes a role and the story is guided and administrated by one person, often called the Game Master. How does interactive fiction (IF)differ?
With IF, each participant still assumes one or more role, however the role of the Game Master(GM) is totally different. With the traditional RPG, the GM determines the storyline and often does what is necessary to keep the characters on that plot, no deviating mind you. With IF, the plots are written by the players, each impacting other plots with interaction.
Or think of it this way: Imagine life but with you as any person you want to be. Life does not shield you from other people, the decisions they make and how those decisions effect your life, neither does IF. While a GM still exists, her role is much different, being more of a guide than a Master of the game.
