Internet Explorer patch 822925

At work we recently patched all our systems with IE update 822925. We have a comglomeration of Windows 95, 98, 98se, WinNT 4, 2000 Pro and XP Pro. The 95 systems use IE 5.5sp2, the 98 and higher use IE 6sp1. Oddly of some 200 computers, 6 gave problems with the 822925 patch. Apparently a problem no one else has encountered. Google, nor Microsoft, have anything documented on this. The 822925 patch removed all local files from the ‘My Computer’ security zone to the ‘Restricted Sites’ security zone.

What does that mean? Lots of problems. Attempts to run programs produces the ‘Are you certain you want to run this program from this security zone’ prompt. People’s wallpapers don’t display (’Your current security settings do not allow ActiveX controls to run’). File details and previews in Windows Explorer don’t work. Many, many problems. There are only two solutions:

  1. Relax the permissions in the Restricted Sites zone
  2. Remove patch 822925

Item 1 is a no-go. Why handicap something that is actually useful (yes, we make use of the RS zone), especially since OE 6 and some versions of Outlook use the RS zone.

Item 2 will only work if 822925 is the last cumulative update you installed. If you placed any patches on afterward, uninstalling is not fun at all.

The truly odd is what I mentioned before, there are no other documented cases of this occuring. Nor could I learn how to reassign my local drives to the MC zone.
