Combating Comment Spam
Alot is has been written to this point about the problem of comment spam. This article, Yoz Grahame’s Cheerleader: Seven quick tips for a spam-free blog, has to be the most balanced I read to date, with quite helpful tips.
Especially important I think is this point:
Variance is the key here. The current spate of Windows viruses are effective because most Windows installations work the same way – the virus rarely has to investigate possible differences that would break it.
This is what I find interesting, when too many use defaults, it creates a weakness. The weakness is: people know where programs and data are, and what such are named. This makes it easier to write an exploit, fewer tests to perform to find what is needed. Thus what is proposed is a concept often called security through obscurity; rename installation directories and change the directory location, even rename files when possible.
For now it seems that is all that is needed. Eventually, as most things go, I foresee a rewrite of certain program aspects to include better security mechanisms and offer less ability to exploitation.
