In February we took a plunge and unplugged ourselves from the Internet. For a month now we’ve used alternate means to obtain the necessary information from the Internet: friends’ connections, work, etc. It was fun, but frustrating at times. Last night that came to an end, I signed up for NetZero, the platinum plan. Not bad, US$10 a month for unlimited hours, and connections nationwide. This easily saves us ~$40 per month in charges (Was using Comcast previously)
Only one problem have I experienced to this point, when a disconnect occurs, the client doesn’t redial properly. It is because the NetZero client stores 2222 as the phone number in the connection properties. I think I will replace it with an actual phone number to see if that changes anything (or look through their support files).
On the plus side, connection sharing works just fine so I can connect all the machines on my network. Online Debian updating again! Yay! Since the connection is so slow however, I am still investigating alternate ways to keep several machines up to date, perhaps apt-proxy will be the choice…
