Lars Wirzenius has a nice post about naming computers. At my employers, they follow the scheme of complicated code revealing location, make, operating system and installation year of machine
. The first three letters specify location. The next letter denotes what kind of machine (‘S’ -> server; ‘W’ -> workstation, etc) and three digits shows its order of newness. Of course last year new computers were purchased and Corporate decided to trump the naming convention a bit by naming all machines beginning with 100. To quote them: that makes it easy to see in Network Neighborhood which machines have Windows XP
. Whatever.
My home computers are another matter, I name them after characters in my stories. The only drab one is the router, named appropriatly "router"l, so exciting! After working with both types, I think using actual names, rather than strange conventions, makes more sense. For some reason it is easier to identify a computer named Dresna, than LOCS055.
