WinXP SP2 oddity: Outlook Express malfunction

Written 01 Dec 2004

Apparently a bug that occurred after Windows XP Service Pack 1, reoccurs upon upgrading to Service Pack 2. This bug affects people who:

Use Outlook Express (OE)

Have multiple profiles configured in OE

The bug stops the “Select a Profile” dialog box from opening, even after a person properly executes “Exit and Logoff profile” from the file menu. Opening OE starts the program, with the default profile. Note that, it starts with the default profile. The fix is easy:

Open OE

Click the File menu

Select Manage Identities (it’s on a submenu, but I cannot recall the name at the moment)

Uncheck the box in the middle of the screen

That is all.

We encountered this bug today at work, when a system finally upgraded to SP2. A Google Search brought us to this Outlook Express Troubleshooting entry
